Grupo Modelo is part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev brewing group and operates 11 breweries in Mexico. Grupo Modelo is the leader in the Mexican beer market, accounting for 57%. Brands such as Freedamm, Victoria, Corona Light, Corona, Estra, and Modelo Especial are all produced by Grupo Modelo. Every third bottle of beer used in Mexico is Corona, which is the only global beer brand that is fully produced in the country of origin. Meanwhile, Corona Extra is among the top most expensive and best-selling beer brands in the world.
Meaning and History
Grupo Modelo was founded in 1922 in Mexico City. A year later, the company bought Cerveceria Modelo, where the first batch of Corona Extra was brewed. The new beer practically took the Mexican market by storm, and the company grew quickly. Exports to the United States started in the 1940s. The company began to buy up competitors’ factories in Guadalajara, Torreon, and other cities, and also built its own factories. In the 1990s, the company began to expand into the world market. A large stake in the company was owned by the giant Anheuser-Busch, which in early 2008 announced its desire to increase its stake in the company to 50.1%. In 2012, AB InBev acquired the remaining stake in Grupo Modelo.

1922 – Today
Grupo Modelo’s logo features a simple yet striking design thanks to the bold color palette. The logo is designed as a round emblem with a wooden beer barrel in the center and a red lion standing on an inverted red triangle behind it. These two elements symbolize strength, high status, and tradition. It is worth noting that the same lion can be seen on the coat of arms of Mexico City. The name “Grupo Modelo” along with its location is prominently displayed in a bold, sans-serif font around the perimeter of the emblem. The overall design is clean and professional, representing the company’s long history and its commitment to brewing excellence.
Font and Color
The bold red, blue, golden, and silver color palette reflects Grupo Modelo’s identity as a major brewery in Mexico. It conveys a sense of quality and heritage. The red has always been a color of leadership and power. Meanwhile, the blue is associated with stability, loyalty, and trust.
The logo uses a relatively simple, sans-serif typeface. It has clean strokes and straight cuts. All the letters are uppercase. The inscriptions are easy to read and create an image of a respectable and strong brand. It is somewhat similar to René Bieder’s Milliard Extra Bold or Disco Jaw Regular font.
