Gensler, headquartered in San Francisco, was founded in 1965 by architect Art Gensler. The firm started as an interior design firm, and today it is the largest architecture firm in the world, building hotels and stadiums on every continent. Art Gensler himself died in 2021, but his legacy lives on and grows.

Meaning and history

Art Gensler was born in 1935 in Hartford, Connecticut. In the late 1950s, Arthur graduated from one of the most prestigious American universities, Cornell University, where he studied at the Department of Architecture, Planning, and Fine Arts. And already in 1965, Art Gensler, his wife Drusilla, and partner James Follett opened in San Francisco architectural firm M. Arthur Gensler Jr. & Associates, Inc. Initially, the company dealt exclusively with interior design.

Since the founding of the firm, Art Gensler never changed his place of work but gave all his efforts and time to his brainchild, which led the office to incredible success. Thus, in 2005, Gensler was recognized as one of the most successful architectural firms in the history of the United States.

Today Gensler employees work in a variety of architectural and design areas, including commercial office buildings, shopping centers, airports, educational institutions, and entertainment complexes.

The firm is engaged in the planning and development of urban planning concepts, brand strategies of territories, ecological graphic design, design of target-purpose buildings, consulting in the field of ecological design, etc.

Gensler’s portfolio includes dozens of major infrastructure projects – from airports and sports complexes to university campuses, and residential and business districts. In particular, the bureau joined the construction of Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport in Seoul, and the reconstruction of San Francisco International Airport and the terminal of John F. Kennedy Airport.

Gensler architects have designed the second tallest building in the world – the 632-meter Shanghai Tower, as well as offices for Adobe, NVIDIA, New York Times, Washington Post, Walmart, and the London Stock Exchange.
