Meaning and history

Bugatti Logo history

The legendary French firm was created by Italian young man, Ettore Bugatti at the beginning of the twentieth century. Today Bugatti is synonymous with the luxury, excellence and the highest quality possible.

The Bugatti logo is one of the most long-standing examples of automobile industry visual identity. Once it was created at the beginning of the company’s history, it has never been changed, even when the brand became the property of Volkswagen Groups.

The iconic logo was designed by Ettore Bugatti’s father, Carlo, who was very famous in Italy jewelry designer and artist.

The Bugatti logo looks like a jewel itself. Its sophistication and finesse are timeless and made the brand’s visual identity one of the classics of the logo designs.

What is Bugatti?
Bugatti is a luxury French automaker, which was established at the beginning of the 20th century and has been in the leading position in the list of the most expensive car brands in the world for decades. Bugatti is specialized in the production of hyper sports cars. Since 1998 the company is a part of the Volkswagen Group.

1909 – 1963

Bugatti Logo 1909

The original Bugatti logo, introduced in 1909, has stayed with the French automaker for more than half a century. The badge featured a horizontally oriented oval in deep red, with a wide light-gray framing, decorated by solid red dots around its perimeter. The central part of the badge boasted a heavy white uppercase logotype in a geometric sans-serif typeface with softened square shapes of the letters. The wordmark was shadowed and accompanied by a bold black “EB” monogram.

1963 – 2007

The redesign of 1963 kept the original composition and color palette of the Bugatti visual identity, but refined the lettering part, switching from a bold sans-serif font to a more traditional one in terms of glyphs’ shapes. The contours became more rounded and elegant, while the badge itself got slightly enlarged, with the red dots gaining a smaller size and a bit more space between each other.

2007 – 2022

In 2007 the iconic Bugatti badge gets another refinement. The framing gets a darker shade of gray, and its thin black outline is now removed from the logo. As the main part of the badge, it features the same white logotype with the black monogram, but the shadow of the inscription became thinner, and the letters now had more space between each other. The red shade of the background becomes lighter and brighter, making the badge look more chic and stylish.

2015 – 2022

In 2015 the Bugatti badge becomes three-dimensional, due to the addition of gradient shades to both red and gray parts of the logo. The gray framing now looked silver, adding an extra luxury feeling to the composition. The lettering gets volume too, as thin gray lines were added to the black shadow, which became thicker again.

2022 – Today

Bugatti Logo

The redesign of 2022 introduced a completely rethought Bugatti badge, with the iconic red medallion completely removed from the composition now. The new Bugatti logo is just a bold uppercase inscription with the name of the company, executed in a modern geometric sans-serif font, with flat black letters written against a white background with no graphical additions. Even the legendary EB monogram is not part of the primary logo version anymore.

The Emblem

Bugatti Emblem

The Bugatti Emblem is composed of a horizontally located oval with sixty dots around its perimeter. The dots are set on a contrast medium-thickness outline of the oval.

There are two versions of the meaning of the dots: practical and lyrical. The first one says that the dots represent safety wires, while the second version shows the dots as pearls, celebrating the company’s expertise in quality and design.

The emblem also features an all-caps logotype on it and the brand’s symbol on top of the wordmark.

The Color

Bugatti Color

The Bugatti palette consists of three colors — red, white and black. Being the main color, red represents passion and love, eternal energy and unique approach of the brand. White is a symbol of purity and elegance, the color, that evokes a sense of loyalty and trust. The black details of the logo add strength, confidence, and professionalism.

The color of the oval outline may vary from white and gray to silver when placed on cars. However, the red color of the background and white or the lettering always remain untouched.

The white wordmark in a clean strict sans serif font looks three-dimensional due to the use of black shadow.

The Symbol

Bugatti Symbol

One more very important detail of the Bugatti visual identity is its symbol, which is placed above the wordmark. The symbol is composed of two letters “E” and “B”, standing back-to-back, where “E” is mirrored. The letters are initials of the brand’s founder, Ettore Bugatti.

Executed in a different form the wordmark typeface, the symbol is drawn in black, which adds more elegance to the classic lines of the lettering.

The bars of the letter “E” looks like the beginning of the “B”’s bars, which creates a sense of speed and movement.

It is a simple yet creative artistic work, a legendary masterpiece, which symbolizes one of the greatest companies ever.

The Font

The uppercase inscription from the Bugatti logo, designed in 2022, is the only element of the badge, so the designers took great care in selecting the proper font for the wordmark. The clean and bold new corporate font of the company features distinctive contours and stable glyphs, resembling iconic modern sans-serif typefaces, such as Moderna Unicase Condensed Bold and Sicret Mono Medium.

What is the Bugatti logo?
The current Bugatti logo is the most minimalistic emblem, ever used by the company. The badge features laconic black uppercase lettering on a plain white background. The style inscription repeats the lettering from the previous iconic Bugatti badge, which was executed in a horizontally-oriented oval shape with a red background, a thin frame with sixty red circles, the white logotype, and the black monogram.

Who made the Bugatti logo?
