Meaning and history

Penn State Nittany Lions logo history

The Penn State Nittany Lions logo has been consistent in its metaphorical core over at least four decades. In 1983, the teams introduced a logo where the side view of the lion’s head was positioned inside an ellipse. The words “Penn State” could be seen below.
In 2001, the abstract lion’s head was replaced by a more realistic version. There was more depth to it, too. However, in 2005, the school returned to the oval medallion, with a slight shift of the palette.
