Penn State Nittany Lions Logo PNG
Almost all of the over 30 athletic teams competing for Pennsylvania State University are known as Penn State Nittany Lions. The only exception is the women’s basketball team nicknamed the Lady Lions.
Meaning and history
1983 – 2000
The Penn State Nittany Lions logo has been consistent in its metaphorical core over at least four decades. In 1983, the teams introduced a logo where the side view of the lion’s head was positioned inside an ellipse. The words “Penn State” could be seen below.
2001 – 2004
In 2001, the abstract lion’s head was replaced by a more realistic version. There was more depth to it, too.
2005 – Today
However, in 2005, the school returned to the oval medallion, with a slight shift of the palette.
