A pinnacle of their achievements includes the 1979 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, where they were runners-up, led by the legendary Larry Bird. Additionally, their track and field program has produced Olympic medalists. Currently, the Sycamores continue to uphold their legacy in collegiate sports, fostering student-athletes who excel both in their sporting endeavors and academic pursuits, contributing positively to the NCAA’s image.

In 1991, the athletic program decided to leave the botanic theme behind. Instead, they adopted a new Indiana State Sycamores logo featuring the map of Indiana.

The men’s basketball program of Indiana State University is proud of its achievements, including:

  • the NCAA Division I Tournament: four appearances
  • the National Invitation Tournament: four appearances
  • the College Basketball Invitational: one appearance
  • the Tournament: one appearance
  • the NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament: three appearances

The women’s team is coached by Vicki Hall.
