While the Eastern Kentucky Colonels logo has stayed more or less consistent in its color scheme since the 1960s, the shape of the logo has gone through a complete overhaul in the beginning of the 2000s.

1965 – 1968

Their original logo is black-and-white drawing of a Southern gentleman with a black coat, a cane in his arm, lifting his hat in a greeting manner and smiling broadly.

1968 – 1974

This design is generally the same figure, but with much less black and a different pose. He now points the cane up and the hat yellow in an open-armed position.

1974 – 2004

In 1974, they turned their mascot into a caricature drawing of the same man with a flag in his one hand and a badge in the other. Both are burgundy with white letters. The former has ‘EKU’ (for ‘Eastern Kentucky University’) painted onto it. The latter just carries the letter ‘E’.

2004 – 2006

The logo used in 2004-2006 featured the lettering “EKU” in maroon with a white and maroon outline. The extended end of the letter “K” stretched far beyond the main line.

2006 – 2017

The current Eastern Kentucky Colonels logo sports a stylized colonel with flowing hair. The full name of the team is placed to the left.

2017 – Today

In 2017, the team decided to drop the obvious KFC symbols from the official logo. Instead, they started using a purple acronym of their name. The letters used there are a bunch of soft letters with miniscule serifs, all tilted to the side. And there’s also a long triangle posing as a line underneath the lot.

Eastern Kentucky Colonels basketball

Eastern Kentucky University sponsors over fifteen teams, including men’s and women’s basketball teams. The men’s team has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances. It is coached by A. W. Hamilton.

The women’s team has won the Kentucky Women’s Intercollegiate Conference Tournament five times. In 2019, Samantha Williams became their head coach. The home arena of the basketball teams is the on-campus Alumni Coliseum.

Football is often named among the university’s most successful programs. Since its inception, the team has won twenty OVC conference titles and two Division I-AA National Championships.
