Amazon Web Services, a subsidiary of Amazon, is a comprehensive cloud computing platform. It has developed over 240 services, from storage and databases to machine learning and application development tools. The services are provided using a system of server farms in various corners of the globe.
Meaning and History
The roots of the company can be traced back to the early 2000s. Not contented with the speed and efficiency of its software engineering teams, Amazon turned to the engineering guru Matt Round of that era for recommendations.
As a result, the company developed a “shared IT platform” for its engineering subdivisions, so that they could use already existing features and tools and focus on customer-facing task that were unique for their teams. In the summer of 2002, Amazon.com Web Services opened this platform to all developers, thus introducing its first web services.
What is Amazon Web Services (AWS)?
Amazon Web Services offers on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individual clients, businesses, and governments. AWS promises to free its customers from managing, scaling, and patching hardware and operating systems.
2006 – 2017
This version of the logo seems to be pretty cluttered, yet it is also easy to understand and interpret. The pictorial part consists of five 3D boxes with orange sides and white edges. They probably represent the ready-made features and tools AWS clients can use.
Moreover, the color and position of the boxes, as well as the way they are drawn make them somewhat similar to a honeycomb. This adds a new dimension to the interpretation and emphasizes the concept of teamwork and collaboration.
2017 – Today
The design has grown utterly minimalistic. That’s not just because it’s a trend – the brand is much better recognizable than it was during its first decade, so it’s only natural to opt for a simpler design.
The logo showcases the abbreviated name of the company in lowercase paired with the legendary arrow/smile symbol below. This symbol is probably the best-known part of Amazon’s brand identity. On the one hand, it’s an arrow pointing from “A” to “Z” in the word “Amazon” (in the parent brand logo) and implying the company has a wide range of products on offer. On the other hand, the symbol can be interpreted as a smile. In this case, it represents the company’s focus on customer satisfaction.
Font and Color
The peculiar thing about the AWS logo is that, while it looks very similar to the logo of the parent company, there are a lot of minor differences. For one, the type is lighter and broader. This can be partly explained by the fact that the lettering “AWS” is shorter than the parent company’s name, so the designers could be more generous with the space.
Also, the color is a bit different. It’s a shade of orange that is vibrant, optimistic, and eye-catching without looking overly straightforward or noisy.
