Meaning and History

The story of Amazon Music started in September 2007, when a public beta of the app was introduced in the United States. Back then, it was known as Amazon MP3. Within the following five years, the platform went live in United Kingdom, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Japan, Spain, and Italy. An advanced version, Amazon Music HD, came into existence in 2019.

What is Amazon Music?
Amazon Music is a music app somewhat similar to Spotify. You can purchase music and podcasts of your choice. Also, the app serves streaming music.

2014 – 2017

The most recognizable feature of the Amazon logo is present in the emblem of its music app. We’re talking about the smile/arrow. This simple element is a symbol representing all the positive emotions that the customers (supposedly) experience while dealing with the company. Also, the way the arrow goes from the “A” to “Z” hints at the endless product selection and end-to-end service.

The “music” part of the logo features a typeface of the same height, but lighter. The difference in the letter thickness helps divide the name into two words. Also, above the word “music,” there’re orange bars stacked in such a way that they look as a kind of music visualizer.

The logo for the mobile version of the app is based on a square with rounded corners. The square is filled with an orange gradient. It houses a small letter “a” in white and the iconic “smile/arrow.” Both the elements look like on the main Amazon logo. The “music visualizer” stack is there, too.

2017 – 2024

The design has grown simpler due to the elimination of the “stack” element. While the stack did add some meaning to the logo by representing music, it consisted of multiple small elements, which created an overly cluttered emblem. It didn’t work great in smaller sizes.

Also, the main lockup, with the word “Amazon,” became black and white. The glyphs grew a little narrower, and the space between the two words was now larger.

The was also a version featuring only the word “music” in purple supplemented by the “smile/arrow.”

The full wordmark has grown wider. The font weight for both the words is the same, while the border between them is created by the space. The “music” color is now teal.

Font and Color

The typeface used in the current logo is Amazon Ember Modern, which is a custom-designed type created specifically for the online giant.

The earlier version was designed using the company’s corporate color, orange. The following logotypes have been based on a different color to distance the music app from the parent brand. The black-and-white version is widely used.
