VLC is a media player program, developed in 2001 by VideoLAN. Today the software has its versions for both desktop and mobile operating systems and is available in almost 50 languages which makes it popular among millions of users across the globe.
Meaning and history
The VLC media player’s visual identity is probably one of the most recognizable of all the software ever developed.
2001 – 2005
The original VLC logo looked pretty much the same as the iconic bright emblem we all can see now, but it was smoother and simple, as the white color used on the orange cone had no pattern or gradients. It was a minimalist yet delightful color palette evoking a happy and friendly feeling.
2005 – Today
The software was originally created by the students of the Parisian École Centrale. And the iconic VLC emblem is a tribute to the group of students, as they had a traffic cone collection in their lab.
It was a funny story about one of the guys coming back from the party and taking the traffic cone from the road. That was the beginning of the collection.
The orange and white cone VLC emblem don’t have ant hidden meaning in it, it was just an intuitive choice.
The VLC logo is modern and always actual. Its bright color palette evokes a friendly and happy feeling. And the story of its creation makes it even more light and playful.
