Meaning and history

VLC Logo history

The VLC media player’s visual identity is probably one of the most recognizable of all the software ever developed.

The three-dimensional orange traffic cone emblem was designed in 2001 and only slightly modified in 2005. This bright and simple image became synonymous with one of the most popular media players in the world.

The software was originally created by the students of the Parisian École Centrale. And the iconic VLC emblem is a tribute to the group of students, as they had a traffic cone collection in their lab.

It was a funny story about one of the guys coming back from the party and taking the traffic cone from the road. That was the beginning of the collection.

The orange and white cone VLC emblem don’t have ant hidden meaning in it, it was just an intuitive choice.

The VLC logo is modern and always actual. Its bright color palette evokes a friendly and happy feeling. And the story of its creation makes it even more light and playful.
