It covers an area of 13,006 acres and is flanked by the McDowell Mountains, Scottsdale, and various Native American communities. Meaning and history
Nestled in the heart of Arizona, the area now known as Fountain Hills boasts an intricate tapestry of history, beginning with the ingenious Hohokam tribes who, from the 12th to the 15th century, crafted a complex network of canals for agriculture. This land later became the home of the Yavapai nation. Fast forward to the mid-19th century, and the locale emerged as a cornerstone of a sprawling ranching dynasty. The pivot from a ranching hub to an urban enclave came in the twilight of the 1960s when visionary entrepreneur Robert McCulloch, recognized for his contributions to the creation of Disneyland, acquired the property.
In its nascent stage, the town was conceptualized to encircle a man-made lake, anticipated to emerge from the construction of a dam by Granite Reef. This body of water was to be the centerpiece of a settlement initially dubbed Chaparral City. However, when the indigenous community at Fort McDowell raised concerns, the lake’s conception was shelved. Nonetheless, the seeds of urban development had already been sown.
The town’s blueprint was drawn with precision, mirroring the idyllic master-planned communities of the time, and in the waning days of 1970, Fountain Hills was born. Over time, it has flourished into a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike, offering a plethora of trails and parks. Its crown jewel, a towering fountain, soars skywards, a testament to human ingenuity and a landmark that once held the title of the world’s tallest fountain. Today, Fountain Hills stands as a fusion of natural allure and communal spirit, inviting all who seek the serene embrace of the Arizonian ethos.
