Meaning and history
The first animated series The Powerpuff Girls, created by Craig McCracken in 1998, became one of the most successful projects of the Cartoon Network. It won two Emmy Awards, was nominated for the award 5 times, and has won numerous other animation awards.
The series ran from 1998 to 2005 on Cartoon Network, and in 2014 the channel decided to relaunch it. The new season premiered in the spring of 2016. Producers of the new Powerpuff Girls were Nick Jennings (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Bob Boyle (Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!).
And in 2022 it was decided to produce a real live-action series, where the sisters Blossom, Bubble, and Buttercup, are no longer little girls, but grown-up beautiful ladies. However, the pilot episode did not go any further, and in 2023 Warner Bros. Studio finally closed the live-action version of The Powerpuff Girls. After The CW rejected the show based on the famous animated series, Warner Bros. decided not to look for a new platform for the project.
What is The Powerpuff Girls?
The Powerpuff Girls is the name of an animated series that aired from 1998 to 2005 and evolved into a live-action television series released in 2022. The franchise revolves around three girls, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who each have superpowers that help them fight “evil”.
In terms of visual identity, The Powerpuff Girls is completely consistent with the storyline and the main characters of the series — bright, girly, and full of power and energy. The official logo, which saw the light in 1998, has undergone several refinements, but the original concept remained unchanged till the end.
1992
The very first attempt to launch the new animated series happened in 1992 when the name of the project was Whoopass Stew! The logo of the cartoon featured a drawing of three girls on a solid orange background, with the rainbow-colored lettering written at the bottom of the composition. The bubbly characters of the inscription were outlined in black for a stronger contrast.
1995 (Pilots)
For the pilot episodes of The Powerpuff Girls, the new logo was created in 1995. It was based on just a custom lettering, executed in a bold cartoonish typeface, with the fuchsia-pink bodies of the bubbly characters and a thick black outline. The dot above the “I” was replaced by a stylized heart symbol.
1998 – 2005, 2008 – 2009
The first official logo of the franchise saw the light in 1998, with the launch of the series. It was a horizontally stretched geometric banner with a black background and a double black-and-white outline. The stylized pink lettering was written against a black part of the badge, with slanted square characters, cool small dots for the negative space, and an enlarged heart above the “I”. The composition was accompanied by three small five-pointed stars in yellow.
2001 – 2002
The redesign of 2001 has refined the contours of the characters in The Powerpuff Girls logo, vertically stretching the negative spaces and cleaning the edges of the bars. Another significant change was made to the shade of pink, which became darker and brighter. The yellow of the three starts also got intensified.
2002 – 2005
In 2002 the three-dimensional version of the Powerpuff Girls logo was introduced by the designers. Pink now became the prevailing color, with tender gradients accompanied by black elements. Yellow was completely removed from the composition, and the three stars were now engraved on a pink voluminous framing of the banner.
2014
In the redesign of 2014, more shades were added to the Powerpuff logo, and the badge was colored in light lilac with glossy gradients. The yellow stars returned to the logo are were still placed in the bottom left corner. As for the main element, the lettering, it got back to the original variant, with small dots in the characters.
2017 – 2022
The logo, created for the series in 2002, came back with a small addition in 2017. The addition was the white sans-serif “Classic” inscription, added to the voluminous pink badge in the bottom right part. The uppercase wordmark was written in plain medium-weight bars against a solid black background.
2023 – Today
In 2023 the logo, created in 1998, was brought back, but slightly modified. The shade of pink was softened and got calmer and more tender, but the shapes of the characters were completely the same, as well as the stars. Another thing in the redesign was the new element: the outlined “Classic” was executed in the same style as the main lettering and placed above the pink and black badge.
Font and color
The bold handwritten lettering from the primary Powerpuff Girls logo is executed in a massive square typeface with heavy elements and straight lines of the contours. The classy hearts above the “I”s add some tenderness and femininity the the stable and brutal composition.
As for the color palette of the Powerpuff Girls visual identity, it is based on a bright combination of pink and black, which stands both for girliness and strength, and a small addition of yellow, which signifies the powers and energy of the main heroes of the cartoon.
