The University of San Diego, which is located in San Diego, California, sponsors a pretty successful athletic program comprised of 17 varsity teams (as of 2019).
Meaning and history
1974 – 1997
The matador character has been the centerpiece of the San Diego Toreros logo since at least 1974. The logo introduced that year featured the matador standing with his head turned down. We cannot see his face at all as the head is turned away from us.
1998 – 2004
On the 1998 emblem, the matador is holding his cape, on which the full names of the university and the team are written.
2005 – Today
On the current version of the logo (2005), we also see the matador but his position is different.
