The athletic program of the University of New Mexico is represented by 20 varsity teams competing under the name of the New Mexico Lobos. Their official mascot is Lobo, which has been depicted on their logo since at least 1999.
Meaning and history
1973 – 1999
The original logo was just a black-and-white depiction of a wolf. They did it in a realistic enough style. The animal itself was given an aggressive, growling look, posed to strike.
1999 – 2008
The New Mexico Lobos logo introduced in 1999 featured the side view of a grey wolf. With its mouth open, the creature looked fierce and dynamic. The name of the team in red and white could be seen below.
2008 – 2017
In 2009, the emblem was updated. Although we can still see the same wolf, it has turned its muzzle forward. While the result looks less dynamic, it shows the aggressiveness in a more obvious way than its predecessor.
2017 – Today
The logo’s color scheme was darkened in 2017, but nothing else changed since 2008.
