The Raspberry Pi is a complete bank card-sized single-board computer with an ARM processor that can run Linux. This microcomputer was developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to provide an affordable platform for experimentation and education in computer programming. Also, the Raspberry Pi is often used as a robot brain, a home server, or just a computer.

Meaning and history

The idea for the Raspberry Pi was born in 2006 thanks to Eben Upton, Rob Mullins, Jack Lang, and Alan Mycroft. It was conceived as a budget system for visual computer science education. After the successful development of several prototypes in the same year, the scientists founded the Raspberry Pi Foundation, from where the story of the triumph of microelectronics and home programming began.

Already at the prototype stage, the device was supposed to cost $25 and was intended to teach schoolchildren the basics of computer wisdom or Computer Science (CS). The founders of the project – staff and teachers of the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory – did not like the fact that every year the level of training of applicants was steadily decreasing. So they wanted to somehow improve or speed up the process of learning computer science.

However, Raspberry Pi sales began only in 2012 with a starting price of $35. From 2012 to 2015, Raspberry Pi “B”, Raspberry Pi “B+”, and Raspberry Pi “2 model B” was released. In November 2015 and February 2017, the project developers created “Lightweight” versions – Zero and Zero W. From 2016 to 2018, the Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi Zero W, and Raspberry Pi 3B+ were released. The main difference between the third-generation models is the presence of Wi-FI, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and more powerful 64-bit processors. At the end of June 2019, the Raspberry Pi 4 was released. The novelty received a complete update of the main components, including the processor, memory, and interfaces.

By today, the microcomputer has a whole line of models and costs from $5. It features not only GPIO pins and USB ports, but also a 64-bit processor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, and 100/10Mbps Ethernet, for a device size 20% smaller than the original model.

What is Raspberry Pi?
Raspberry Pi is the name of a miniaturized single-board computer that can easily fit in the palm of an adult’s hand. The Raspberry Pi was originally designed as a computer science textbook. But the idea itself was so successful that in a few years, the mini-computer became popular in very wide circles. Over time, Raspberry Pi has gone through several modifications, each of which differed from its predecessor in some parameters.

In terms of visual identity, Raspberry Pi is quite literate — since the first days of the company on the market, it has been using one graphical logo, with the depiction of the berry from its name, and nothing else.

2011 – Today

Raspberry Pi Logo

The logo for the Raspberry Pi microcomputer was created in 2011, five years after the prototype of the device was developed, and a couple of months before the official start of sales. The badge, executed in a bright pink, black, and green color palette, depicts a stylized raspberry drawn in thick smooth lines, with small sharp detailing of the two green leaves, on top of the composition. The logo looks very modern and eye-catching and perfectly works for all digital needs.

Font and color

Raspberry Pi Emblem

The official logo of the Raspberry Pi computer is composed solely of the graphical part, with lettering on it. As for the color palette of the brand’s visual identity, it features an intense shade of pink, which looks cool and fancy, black, which adds professionalism and excellence, and green, which is the color of growth, learning, and progress.
