New Jersey Institute of Technology sponsors almost 20 varsity teams competing at the NCAA Division I level under the name of the NJIT Highlanders.
Meaning and history
The current NJIT Highlanders logo, which was adopted upon joining the NCAA Division I in 2006 -07, features a stylized Scottish Highlander warrior in traditional garb. The highlander theme was chosen for the institute’s brand identity for several reasons.
One of them was that the place where it was located used to be known as the Newark Highlands (today the area is referred to as University Heights). Moreover, the school’s mailing address used to be High Street.
