Playing in Ligue 1, France’s top football division, Olympique Lyonnais, or simply Lyon, has recently carried a minor facelift for its emblem, changing a bit the typography and color palette.
As in many cases, Lyon’s identity update aims to adapt the club’s logo to digital environments. As a part of the refreshment, the wordmark, form of the lion, colors, as well as the form of the shield, have been altered. The general structure, however, has been kept. Remastered, the emblem showcases a more contrasting design, having different proportions of the elements. The iconic lion, as an identity-forming figure, has received more space.

At the same time, the logo update is rather surprising, and besides, getting disapproval from the French Football Federation. The point is that, a couple of weeks ago, Lyon presented new jerseys for the upcoming season, which feature the club’s old logo. So, the branding policy of the club has proven to be rather inconsistent. It’s not clear yet how Lyon will settle this problem.
