Neuralink, a company developing implants that allow you to control a computer with the power of thought, was founded in 2016. In the long term, according to its creator Elon Musk, the invention should help treat diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and possibly bring humans to the same level as the computer superintelligence of the future.

Meaning and history

Neuralink is an American company engaged in the development of brain implants. Created with the participation of Elon Musk, the company began its activities in 2016, it was presented in March 2017.

Its development should become a universal neuro interface that could provide virtually seamless communication between man and machine, becoming an extension of our brain.

When Elon Musk first talked about the Neuralink neural-brain interface, news of it spread around the world in a matter of hours. A little later, he said that work on neural interfaces began for the simple reason that Musk himself fears the emergence of a strong form of artificial intelligence hostile to humans. And one way to prevent the emergence of a new enemy is to allow humans to connect their brains to a computer system.

Little was known about the firm’s performance until July 2019. By July 2019, the company had received $158 million in funding, $100 million of which was from Musk. At that point, it employed 90 people. That same year, the company created the N1 chip designed to be implanted in the brain and developed a robot to implant the chip, and a smartphone app to control the chip.

In the summer of 2020, there was a presentation of the Link chip with the participation of Elon Musk. The most amazing thing about this event was that with the help of a chip in the head of one pig and computer processing of neuron signals, scientists were able to predict ahead of time where the animal would move, and what joints and muscles its brain would use.

In May 2023, Neuralink received FDA approval to conduct a human clinical trial. Previously, the application had been rejected. In January 2024, the company implanted the chip in its first patient. A robot was used for the surgery. The chip is installed in the part of the brain that controls the intention to move so that a person can control a computer mouse and keyboard with thoughts. The company’s first neurochip was named Telepathy.

As of the end of March 2024, the patient has already learned how to control a computer mouse – literally with the power of thought and is also mastering other skills. According to the company representatives, the test participant has fully recovered, with no damage to brain tissue and no side effects.

The company said that the participants of the experiment (other volunteers are planned to be recruited in the future) will be monitored for five years. During this period, the volunteers must use the chip at least twice a week to operate computers.

What is Neuralink?
Neuralink is the name of a company founded by Elon Musk in 2016 and is developing the world’s first minimally invasive neurochip, a special device that can transmit brain signals via Bluetooth. This will allow you to control a computer or smartphone directly, using brain impulses.

In terms of visual identity, the Neuralink logo is an abstract image, which looks like a symbiosis of an infographic element and an optical illusion, drawn in a very minimalistic way. It makes sense, as the number one aim of Musk’s most ambitious project is to link the human brain and the computer, based on scientific data.

2016 – Today

Neuralink Logo

The Neuralink logo is set in a black-and-white color palette and has two versions: the primary one and the shortened one, which only differs in the lettering part. The primary logo is composed of an abstract emblem, and the uppercase “Neuralink” wordmark is placed in the upper right part of the composition, while the shortened version has just the bold capital “N”.

However, the main part of the logo is the emblem, which is drawn in one thick black line in a shape, that resembles an infinity sign with an open contour, but with loops of different sizes — the left one is larger. Also, the drawing has one part strictly horizontal, with sharp angles on both sides. Thus, the emblem of the company resembles an action potential graph, and at the same time has something from an optical illusion.

Font and color

Neuralink Emblem

The slanted uppercase lettering from the primary Neuralink logo is set in quite a simple geometric sans-serif typeface with distinctive contours of the characters. The closest commercial fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Candid, FF Markteg Paneuropean, or Clobber Grotesktrade.

As for the color palette of the Neuralink visual identity, it is as simple as possible — black and white, however, we can often see the whole logo placed on fantasy three-dimensional backgrounds with gradients and realistic elements.
