Meaning and History

J Crew Logo history

It all started back in 1947 when two creative friends, Mitchell Cinader and Sol Charles, decided to start their own business – the Popular Merchandise Inc. At that time, it was a small shop selling clothes for women from poor families. In 1983, it changed the brand name to a shorter one – J.Crew. The first catalog was released that same year, and a few years later the first brand store opened in New York. Thanks to the designer’s creative assistant, Jenna Lyons, who joined the team in 1990, the brand has raised to the tops. In 2010, she became the head of the company. The brand had its ups and downs and even declared bankruptcy but it is not ready to completely disappear.

Crew’s focus on classic American style and quality, appealing to customers who are looking for quality, stylish items.

This version has a clean, minimalist design that still consists of the brand name displayed in a simple, serif font. All the letters are capitalized to give it a solid and trustworthy look. It is worth noting that the “J” has its hook going below the base line. Despite a change in font choice, the logo still manages to look sophisticated and stylish.

2012 – Today

The updated logo looks almost identical to the previous version. The only noticeable change was the letter “J”. It no longer extends beyond the base line and now has the same height as the other letters. The whole logo was made slightly bolder and the letters are not as tall as previously. The update gave it a more cohesive look. Despite the modifications, the brand image stayed recognizable.

Font and Color

J Crew Emblem

The earlier logo version features an elegant cursive font that gives the logo a sophisticated and refined appearance. The font is very similar to the Mea Culpa ROB font as well as the WT Hilton Script Fancy font. Later, it switched to a less fancy, classic serif font that resembled a slightly modified Copernicus Book font or ZT Bros Oskon 90s Light Extra Expanded font. This font allowed the company to preserve a traditional feel without looking outdated.

The color palette has stayed consistent throughout the years. All the logo elements were done in classic black. This color gives the brand that sophisticated and elegant look. It is also a timeless choice and quite universal. Moreover, this color is associated with strong influence and power, which the brand strived to achieve.
