Herradura, a venerable tequila brand, specializes in crafting premium tequilas. Originating from Jalisco, Mexico, it has deep roots in traditional tequila-making processes. Currently, the brand’s presence extends globally, with North America as a significant market. Brown-Forman Corporation, a major spirits and wine company, holds ownership of Herradura. With its distinguished horseshoe emblem, Herradura continues to be recognized for its commitment to quality and authenticity.

Meaning and history

Established in 1870, Herradura has its origins in Amatitán, Jalisco, Mexico, at the historic Hacienda San Jose del Refugio. Founded by Félix López, the distillery remained family-owned for over a century, diligently maintaining traditional tequila-making methods. Herradura was a pioneer in many aspects, including being one of the first to produce reposado and añejo tequilas, aging them in oak barrels for added depth and flavor.

Through the 20th century, Herradura saw growth, bolstered by its commitment to authenticity. Their tequilas were made using 100% blue agave, at a time when many brands opted for mixtos, which blended agave with other sugars.

The 1980s marked a significant era for Herradura. In 1984, they introduced the first commercially available extra añejo, “Selección Suprema,” setting new industry standards.

However, ownership transitioned in 2007 when Brown-Forman Corporation acquired Casa Herradura, including both the Herradura and El Jimador brands, for $776 million. This acquisition facilitated the brand’s global reach, yet Herradura continued to preserve its time-honored processes.

Despite modern pressures, Herradura remains one of the few tequila producers using traditional clay ovens to cook the agave, and fermenting naturally with wild yeast. Over the years, while ownership and markets expanded, the core of Herradura – its commitment to authentic tequila production – has remained unchanged.
