Meaning and history

Ford F-150 Logo history

In 1947, the Ford Motor Company introduced the Ford F-Series light trucks. The company had been producing cars of such class before, but earlier they were modified passenger cars for cargo transportation. The F-series consisted of a specially designed truck chassis. Especially for the F-series, a new cab was designed, which was unified throughout the model range.

The second generation of the F-Series, released in 1952, was an evolutionary development of the first. Based on marketing considerations, all cars changed their designations. So the Ford F-1 became known as the Ford F-100, F-2 and F-3 were combined into F-250, and the F-4 became the F-350.

Third-generation pickups, which appeared in 1956, can be distinguished from their predecessors by a radically different appearance. The fourth generation of the Ford F-Series saw the light of day in 1960.

By the end of the 1960s, it became apparent that more and more Americans were using pickup trucks as regular personal vehicles. As a consequence, the fifth-generation vehicles were created with an even greater bias toward comfort and ease of operation.

In the first half of the 1970s, there was a boom in pickups in the U.S. The F-Series became even more comfortable and versatile. In 1974, an extended, 6-seat two-door SuperCab became available for the first time in the series. A year later, a new model Ford F-150 appeared.

What is Ford F-150?
Ford F-150 Is the name of one of the Ford Motor Company SUV truck models, which was introduced in 1975, as a part of the Ford F-Series line, created by the company at the end of the 1940s. Ford F-150 is one of the most popular trucks in the United States.

In terms of visual identity, Ford has been using a heavy uppercase “F150” banner along with the corporate emblem on its vehicles, with the badge set in almost the same style from year to year, but still bringing some modifications into its style to reflect progress and evolution of the marque.

1997 – 2003

The Ford F-150 emblem, used at the end of the 1990s, featured a smooth silver inscription in a futuristic sans-serif font with some of the angles softened, and others — sharp, which created a sense of motion and dynamics. The silver symbols were outlined in black and underlined by the red “XLT” abbreviation in the uppercase of the same font, but smaller size.

2004 – 2009

In 2004 the badge of the model was refined, and now it was black in script engraved on a glossy silver rectangular plate with softened angles. The “XLT” was now engraved in small medium-weight capitals on the left from the Triton wordmark, set in the same size and style.

2009 – 2014

The redesign of 2009 has emboldened the lines of the symbols on the F-150 badge, slanting them to the right, which made the badge look more dynamic and confident. There was no tagline during this period, and the F-150 inscription was enough for representing the model of the iconic American pickup truck.

2015 – Today

In 2015 the symbols on the F-150 badge got silver again, without any black accents on them. The typeface was switched to a more geometric one with numerous angles on the corners, adding brutality and strength to the badge. The silver inscription was accompanied by a narrow black grille with the silver “XLT” written on it in a clean sans-serif font.

Font and color

Ford F-150 Emblem

The gray and angular inscription from the latest Ford F-150 badge is set in a custom geometric sans-serif font which has no commercial analogs. Although, the typeface of the wordmark slightly resembles such fonts as 946 Latin XWide 4, or MyCard Bold, with significant modifications of the characters’ contours.

As for the color palette of the Ford F-150’s visual identity, it is based on a timeless and powerful combination of black and white, which looks stable and confident, and at the same time brutal and aggressive, just like the cars, produced by the Ford Motor Company under the F-150 badge.
