Energy Star Logo history

The visual identity of the American program was created in 1992 and stayed almost untouched by today. The only change, made to it throughout the years touched mainly the color palette.

1992 – 2003

Energy Star Logo-1992

The original Energy Star logo featured a handwritten cursive “Energy” lettering placed slightly diagonally above a thin horizontal line. The straight minimalist Star was placed at the end of the word.

The whole logo was “covered” by a thin arch, which started above the first “El of the wordmark and finished above the Star.

For the first ten years, there were two main variants of the logo — the official and most used monochrome one, and the brighter and more or tame, where the yellow inscription with a Star was placed on a half-circle with the globe pattern.

The green, blue and yellow color palette of the second version made the whole logo look fresh and instantly recognizable, showing the program’s purpose and a strong connection to the Planet and its ecology.

2003 – Today

Energy Star Logo

The logo we all know today was created in 2003 and is fully based on the previous version. The framed inscription with the Star is executed in white and placed inside a sky-blue square, with the “Energy Star” tagline in capital letters of a minimalist sans-serif typeface.

The blue and white color palette is a representation of loyalty and safety, it evokes a sense of trustworthiness and care, showing the character and main values of the program and its dedication to making the world better.

Font and color

The white cursive lettering from the Energy Star logo is synonymous withthe product’s compliance with energy efficiency requirements. It is executed in a custom lightweight font, with the title case characters going slightly upright above the line, and the tails of some glyphs elongated. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Roderick Regular or Blastone Solid, but with most contours modified.

As for the color palette of the Energy Star badge, it is composed of a bright and vivid sky-blue shade with white lines. The combination of blue and white looks delightful and fresh, evoking a sense of professionalism, security, and quality.
