CapCut is a free all-in-one video editing tool that has everything you need to create high-quality, visually appealing videos and graphics. The app was developed by ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, in 2020. It is thanks to this social network that CapCut has gained incredible popularity, becoming one of the most downloaded video editors in the world.
Meaning and history
In the late 2010s, ByteDance, the company that created one of the most popular social networks today, TikTok, thought about developing an application that would simplify the creation of video content for millions of users, taking the quality of clips to a new level. That’s how CapCut came into being in early 2020. More precisely, the app was called Viamaker for the first couple of months, but the name was changed very quickly.
So, CapCut is a free video editor with a huge variety of filters, stickers, and fonts. You can apply music, trim videos, add filters and effects, and create subtitles. And the main feature of CapCut, with the help of which the application has managed to gain incredible popularity, is that here users can create their own templates and share them with others.
CapCut allows you to create professional videos without the need for advanced video editing knowledge. What’s more, this application even has an auto-edit function that can be used to edit a short video in just a few minutes.
CapCut can be used to create both short Reels and YouTube videos, but the most popular use of the app is still the creation of local templates in TikTok, which can be easily copied from other users and insert your content there.
The CapCut app is available on both iOS and Android, making it accessible to most mobile device users from all over the globe.
In terms of visual identity, CapCut is stable and professional. The logo concept, created at the beginning of the 2020s has stayed with the application with just a few small modifications, while the core idea and style remained untouched.
2020 (Pre-launch)
The pre-launch name of the application was Viamaker, hence it was on the lettering of the very first logo. The uppercase geometric wordmark with the erased horizontal bars of both “A”s was set in bold black lines at the bottom of the composition, where the graphical element plays the leading role. The image depicted a stylized video camera image, which was placed horizontally, resembling scissors by its contours.
2020 – 2022
The first official CapCut badge introduced a few months later, was based on the same idea. But the emblem got enlarged and placed on the left from the lettering, which was written in a more classy sans-serif font, with sharpened tails of some of the vertical pars and smooth contours of the characters.
2022 – Today
The redesign of 2022 has kept the concept and style of the CapCut logo, designed in 2020, but refined the contours of both the emblem and the lettering. The lines of the stylized camera got thicker and its shape — slightly flatter, while the title case character of the wordmark, on the contrary, gained fuller contours and more distinctive bars.
Font and color
The bold title case lettering from the primary logo of the CapCut application is executed in a modern and strong sans-serif typeface with clean contours of stable characters. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Filson Pro or Nexa, but with some significant modifications of the contours.
As for the color palette of the CapCut visual identity, it is a minimalistic yet timeless combination of black and white, which stands for quality, excellence, and style.
