Grok is a generative AI chatbot created by X.AI Corp., a US-based startup founded by Elon Musk in March 2023. The chatbot works on the large language model of the same name and has direct access to X (ex-Twittter).
Meaning and History
It all started in 2015, when Elon Musk and Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI, the startup working in artificial intelligence research. Just three years later, Musk refused to be part of the board claiming he wasn’t in full agreement with the actions the startup wanted to take. Following the release of GPT-4 in March 2023, Musk said he would develop an AI chatbot “ThruthGPT” based on a completely different approach than the “politically correct” ChatGPT. The project was then renamed Grok, and in November 2023, an early beta version began to spread among selected users.
What is Grok?
Grok is an AI-powered assistant, a chatbot introduced by Elon Musk’s company X.AI Corp. One of its characteristic features, according to its developers, is a “sense of humor.”
2023 – 2025
In May 2024 Grok-1 was released with a minimalist typographic logo based on the Josefin Sans font. The distance between the letters was pretty generous. The font itself wasn’t in any way narrow, with “o” forming a full circle rather than an oval.
The wordmark was black and white, as was the X.AI icon. To interpret the icon, you just need to place it side by side with that of another Musk’s company, X. It’s obvious that the X.AI emblem is nothing but a reduced version of that of X. That’s a straightforward way to emphasize the connection between the two entities, thus helping Grok benefit from the link to the better-recognizable brand.
January – February 2025
Both Grok and its parent company got a logo update in the same style. The X.AI emblem isn’t now just a trimmed version of that of X. The long diagonal line became bolder and better visible, and a vertical line was added to it, forming the letter “A.” The letter “x” is also present, due to the addition of a smaller diagonal line.
The “folded tape” effect characteristic of the X.AI logo is also present on that of Grok – it’s obvious in the shape of the “r” glyph. Another peculiar character is the “k” with its lower diagonal line moved slightly to the right from the position it should have taken.
Also, the wordmark has grown a bit heavier. The effect appeared because the thickness of the lines in the Grok wordmark fits the lines of its parent company’s icon. The “o” has grown a little more elongated – it’s now an oval instead of the original circle.
2025 – Today
The new Grok logo features a sleek, modern design set against a white background, combining simplicity with a futuristic edge. On the left, a stylized black circular symbol with a diagonal slash cutting through it evokes a sense of motion and technology, suggesting speed and innovation. To the right, the word “Grok” is written in bold, uppercase black letters using a clean, sans-serif font, exuding clarity and confidence. This minimalist design represents xAI’s AI assistant, Grok, symbolizing its role in providing insightful, accessible, and forward-thinking responses, reflecting the cutting-edge nature of artificial intelligence and human-AI interaction.
Font and Color
The initial logo was built using the Josefin Sans typeface, which is geometric, elegant, with a vintage feeling. The author of the font, a Mexico-based designer Santiago Orozco, drew inspiration from geometric sans serif typefaces from the 1920s. Josefin Sans was developed for use in larger sizes.
The wordmark introduced in January 2025 featured a different type, with more obvious customized details.
