What is California Irvine Anteaters?

California Irvine Anteaters in the collegiate athletic program for UC Irvine, or the University of California in Irvine. The program consists of 18 clubs where men and women athletes compete in such sports disciplines as Water Polo, Basketball, Baseball, Golf, and others.

As for the visual identity, unlike many other sports teams of the collegiate athletic programs, the Anteaters decided not to use its mascot on the primary badge, keeping the official logo simple and strong. The anteater became the official mascot of the athletic program from the University of California in Irvine in 1965 and was present in the emblems, drawn in different styles and colors, until 2008.

1984 — 1990

The California Irvine Anteaters logo, designed in 1984, was a bright and funny image, which stayed with the program for more than five years. It was a simplified drawing of an anteater’s side view. The animal was facing to the right and executed in solid yellow color, wearing a blue jersey with a bold white “UCI” abbreviation written over it. The mascot was outlined in blue, balancing the color of the uniform.

1998 — 2008

In 1998 the logo of the sports teams from UC Irvine was redrawn in a sting and modern manner, with the anteater image accompanied by an enlarged monogram. The animal was now set in light-gray and blue and was drawn more realistically than on the previous badge, the yellow composition of three intertwined letters “UCI” was placed behind the anteater and featured a thick blue outline.

2009 — 2013

In 2009 the logo gets redesigned again, with the drawing of the anteater completely removed from the composition, and the monogram from the previous version slightly refined and enlarged. The letters were now set in dark blue and featured a thin yellow outline, which made the heavy serif contours of the “UCI” badge lighter and more elegant. No further additions were present on the badge.

2014 — Today

The redesign of 2014 slightly darkened the color palette of the “UCI” monogram and emboldened its contours, making the yellow outline thicker, and the dark blue bodies of the letters — narrower. The new badge of the California Irvine anteaters looks professional and very strong, due to the simplicity of its composition, clean lines, and strict yet bright color palette.
