Apart from playing in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, since 2013 the Butler Bulldogs teams are all members of the Big East Conference, which is an intercollegiate athletic organization, established in 2013, and consisting of 11 college members, covering 22 sports disciplines. Before joining the Big East, the athletic program of Butler University was a part of the Horizon League and the Atlantic 10 Conference, but just for one season.

What is Butler Bulldogs?

Butler Bulldogs is the collegiate athletic program of Butler University, which consists of 9 men’s and 11 women’s teams, competing in various sports disciplines, including Cross Country, Baseball, Basketball, indoor and outdoor Track and Field, Lacrosse, and a few others.

In terms of visual identity, the Butler Bulldogs athletic program has been quite constant since the beginning of the 1990s. The main element of the logo hasn’t changed much since then, being only refined and enlarged, with a slight alternation of its color palette. The central symbol of the last two logos of Butler Bulldogs is the drawing of its mascot, which appeared by accident.

1990 — 2014

Butler Bulldogs Logo 1990

The Butler Bulldogs logo, designed in 1990, featured a combination of a graphical emblem, and a logotype placed under it. It was a fresh and clean composition, executed in a calm blue and white color palette, with the drawing of the billfold head in white set on a solid blue circle, and underlined by a bold blue logotype in all capitals. The inscription was set in an elegant typeface with elongated and sharp serifs on the ends of the letter lines. The middle part of the lettering had its upper line arched from the center, repeating the contour of the circular emblem above it.

2015 — Today

The redesign of 2015 kept the main element untouched but simplified the composition of the logo. Now the Butler Bulldogs badge features the same drawing with the bulldog’s head, but executed in a darker blue, white, and gray color palette, and outlined in all three colors, with blue — being the boldest. The drawing is now set directly in a transparent background, with no circular medallions or framings. The lettering was fully removed from the badge as well.
