What is Brink’s?
Brink’s is the name of an international company that has been specializing in the transportation and storage of valuable cargo for over 160 years. Today, the company’s services are used by the US Mint, the US Federal Reserve Bank, the London Bullion Association, and many others.
In terms of visual identity, Brink’s has always been strong and confident, using minimum details for its logo, the company managed to stay stable even after numerous redesigns. Starting in the 1980s, the main element of Brink’s badge is the lettering.
1859 – 1919
The original Brink’s logo, created in 1859, has stayed with the company for the first sixty years of its history, with absolutely no changes. It was a square black plate with a three-leveled silver lettering engraved on it. The inscription was set in the uppercase of a narrowed sans-serif typeface with distinctive bars and cuts of the lines.
1919 – 1927
The first redesign was held by the company only in 1919. The new concept was completely different: now the Brink’s logo was a contoured chest enclosed between two classy wings and placed on a horizontally stretched oval medallion in a double frame. The composition is accompanied by a bold black capital “B” written in a gothic-style typeface.
1927 – 1934
The style of the Brink’s logo wasn’t changed much, but the lines became bolder and stronger, making up a more professional look for the winged chest emblem. This version of the logo was used by the company for almost seven years.
1934 – 1962
In 1927 the contours of the Brink’s logo were cleaned up and strengthened, with the “B” rewritten in a sharper and bolder font. But now the medallion became just a part of the new concept: it got smaller and was placed inside a larger oval, with a thick black frame, where the narrowed white “Brink’s Incorporated” lettering was written.
1962 – 1981
The redesign of 1962 has introduced a new look of the Brink’s logo. This time the shape of the badge was changed to a classy sharp shield, which symbolized protection and security. The crest with wings was redrawn in a more modern and geometric way, and placed at the bottom part of the shield, under the extra-bold sans-serif “B” in white.
1981 – 2018
The black-and-white color palette of the Brink’s visual identity was changed to bright blue and white in 1981. But this was not the only modification: both the “B” and the graphical emblem were redrawn. The letter was now set in a more interesting yet still bold and stable sans-serif, while the chest got minimized, with the lock wiped off from the image.
1981 – 1983
In the same 1981, another version of the Brink’s logo was created by the designers. And this was the badge, which became a basis for the current company’s insignia. The bold uppercase wordmark in a geometric sans-serif typeface with thin stencils was written in black bars against a white background, on the right from the laconic graphical emblem, composed of five black vertical lines of different thickness.
1983 – 1997
The redesign of 1983 has slightly refined the contours of all elements in the Brink’s logo, bringing more air in between the lines, and a bit cutting on the height of the characters and the bars of the emblem, which has made the badge look more compact and balanced.
1997 – Today
In 1997 another redesign was held by the international company. The main thing about this refinement was in the strengthening of the contours of the characters and applying a new color palette, composed of smooth and calming shades of blue and white. However, the black-and-white variant can also be used by Brink’s for special needs.
Font and color
The bold uppercase lettering from the primary logo of Brink’s is set in a geometric sans-serif typeface, which looks pretty close to such commercial fonts as Europa Grotesk No. 2 SH Trade or Lupio, but with shortened horizontal bars of the first two characters.
As for the color palette of the Brink’s visual identity, it is based on a strong and fresh combination of blue and white, the one, that is usually chosen by the financial and security companies, as it evokes a sense of professionalism, confidence, and protection.
