There are many programs for recording audio and subsequent processing by editing and applying various effects. These include both simple free audio editors and sophisticated professional multimedia audio processing applications.

Sound. For most audio editing and processing tasks, the Audacity program, which is the most popular program in its segment today, is suitable.

Meaning and history

Audacity Logo history

Audacity is a multiplatform sound file editor distributed on a free basis. The editor has a simple and straightforward interface, which has made it the most popular among users of different levels of expertise and for different purposes. Audacity has versions for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

Audacity is distributed with source code. This means that its source code can be viewed and modified by anyone. Audacity is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Due to its open-source nature, many third-party plug-ins have been developed for Audacity.

The program supports importing, exporting, and converting files of all popular audio formats including mp3, m4a, AIFF, FLAC, WAV, and others. The Audacity editor supports 16-, 24- and 32-bit audio.

What is Audacity?
Audacity is the name of a sound file processing program released in 2000 by the Muse Group and ranked first among free programs in its field. The program’s arsenal includes many functions and filters for processing musical compositions.

The Audacity project has been around for more than 20 years and continues to enjoy popularity despite its archaic interface and not the simplest sound processing process. And the same “old-school” naivety of design can be seen in the visual identity of the editor.

2002 – 2017

Audacity Logo 2000

The original Audacity logo, designed at the beginning of the 2000th, has given a basis for the future badges of the sound processing program. The three-dimensional gradient purple title case lettering in a narrowed serif font, based on the Onyx typeface, was placed on the right from a graphical emblem, depicting purple headphones with the yellow-to-orange flame-like sound waves in the center.

2014 (Unused)

Audacity Logo 2014

In 2014 there was an idea to update the logo for the popular program, but the badge concept stayed unused. The main changes were made to the color palette of the composition (purple turned blue), and to the style of the lettering, where the terrace was switched to a modern geometric sans-serif, and the first and second characters got merged.

2017 – Today

Audacity Logo

The first official redesign of the Audacity logo was held in 2017. The concept was completely the same as in the 2000th, however, the lettering and emblem were redrawn in a flat style, but there still are gradient shades in the wordmark. The inscription gained a new font — a medium-bold sans-serif with softened ends of the bars, and some playful tails.

Font and color

Audacity Emblem

The playful title case lettering from the primary logo of the Audacity editor is set in a smooth sans-serif typeface; which is based on the Signika Semibold commercial font. It looks quite naive and simple, yet this is what makes the program recognizable.

As for the color palette of the Audacity visual identity, it is based on intense shades of purple, yellow, and red, with orange and black additions. Purple here is a symbol of creativity, while red stands for passion, and yellow shades represent the energy and power of the sound.
