Viking is a Canadian-Irish historical television series that aired on the History Channel for six seasons from 2013 to 2020. The series Vikings has become one of the most popular television projects of recent years and is among the top 250 best TV shows according to IMDB. The plot of the series is based on Scandinavian sagas about the events of the late VIII-IX centuries when warriors from Scandinavia raided the kingdoms of Western Europe and conquered cities.

Meaning and history

Michael Hirst’s historical drama Vikings premiered on March 3, 2013. The show stayed on the screen for 6 seasons and got a spin-off. Despite the fact that Vikings is a historical TV series, there is more fiction here, as the producer of the project, Michael Hirst, directly says. Vikings attract viewers with an exciting plot, dramatic scenes, and colorful visualization. In addition to the entertainment component, fictionalized by scriptwriters, the series actively uses stories from Scandinavian mythology.

The prototype for many characters of Vikings served as real historical figures, but despite this, in the TV movie, several events are far from reality.

The plot of Vikings is built around the raids of Scandinavians on the British Isles in the VIII century. The main character, Ragnar Lothbrok is an excellent warrior, and hunter, who considers himself the son of Odin and enters any battle, knowing that everything is the will of the gods.

Ragnar Lothbrok was indeed described in the sagas of the ancient Normans. Reliable information and facts about his real biography are practically absent, and there are several versions of the origin of the historical Ragnar. Among them is the assumption that he was the son of the konung Sigurd the Ring. Some scholars believe that the legendary Ragnar is probably none other than the Viking chieftain Reginherus. Others associate the name Ragnar with the ruler of the Danes, Horik I.

The original Canadian-Irish TV series Vikings ran from 2013 to 2020. However, the characters were so beloved by millions of viewers around the world that an 8-episode spin-off, Vikings: Valhalla, was released in February 2022.

In terms of visual identity, the Vikings series has been using the same logo for all six seasons, and this interesting V-shaped badge has many hidden meanings in all of its elements.

Vikings Logo

The upper left part of the stylized letter “V” with three stripes separated by dots stands for “Family” and the wavy lines to the right of it stand for “Technology and Shipbuilding”. The two rings linked by a geometric chain symbolize “Brotherhood”, and the elegant pattern into which they flow symbolizes “Growth and Life”. As for the right bars of the “V”, there are fewer details, but their meanings are more militant as well. The “potholes” on the smooth surface of the line are a symbol of “Conflict”, while the sharp blade at the top stands for “Violence”.

Font and color

Vikings Emblem

The primary version of the Vikings logo is based on the stylized letter “V”, full of graphical elements, however, the emblem can often be found accompanied by the sharp and brutal lettering, set in the uppercase of a modern sans-serif typeface with the bars of the characters “scratched” by thin diagonal lines in white. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, FS Industrie Extended, EFCO Overhold Expanded, or Moister Refular with some visible modifications of the contours.

As for the color palette of the Vikings visual identity, here we have two versions: the classy black-on-white, which doesn’t need any comments, and the gradient gray one, with the silverish lines resembling the blades of the warriors’ swords.
