It was with the production of potato chips that Utz Brands began in 1921. Today, it is based in Hanover, Pennsylvania, but ships its snacks not only throughout the United States but also to many other countries around the world.
Meaning and history
One of the most famous versions of the appearance of potato chips says that they were invented in 1853 by an American culinary artist George Croom. At the time, he was working at a resort hotel in the town of Saratoga Springs, New York, and was cooking potato slices. A customer at the hotel complained that the potato slices he ordered were too thick and inedible. In response, Croom sliced the potato slices much thinner than usual and fried them in oil until crispy.
That’s how the first chips came to be. And already in 1921, the Utz company was founded, which started its way with the production of potato chips, which are still the main product of the company today.

What is Utz?
Utz is the name of the leading brand of the Utz Brands company, which specializes in the production of various salty snacks, such as potato chips, popcorn, pretzels, and many more. The Utz chips were the first product of the company, launched in 1921.
In terms of visual identity, Utz is one of those brands, which sticks to its roots and only makes delicate refinements to its original logo, without losing its individuality and recognizability.
1921 – 1947
The original logo was designed in 1921 when the brand’s name was a bit different — Utz’s. It was a combination of a white wordmark in an oval frame, set on a solid red background, and a separate emblem that depicted a blue and white portrait of a girl eating chips and wearing a large red bow in her hair.
1947 – 1960
The redesign of 1947 has rewritten the lettering in bolder lines with more distinctive angular contours, in dark blue, against a transparent background. As for the graphical part, it was now set on the side from the wordmark, also directly on a white background, with no additional framing.
1960 – 1971
In 1960 the name of the brand was shortened to “Utz” and the lettering was rewritten in the lowercase of a modern sans-serif typeface with clean neat contours. The new inscription is written in a darker shade of blue and accompanied by a more orange image of a girl, placed in the upper left part of the banner.
1971 – Today
The redesign of 1971 has brightened up the Utz logo by using a more delightful shade of blue, and a more intense red. The emblem depicting a smiling girl was redrawn, using more red for the girl’s dress and with the bow changing its shape to a more minimalistic one.
Font and color
The bold lowercase lettering from the primary Utz logo is set in a stable geometric sans-serif typeface, which looks pretty close to such fonts as Venus Envytrade, or House Sans with minimalistic shapes and straight cuts of the lines.
As for the color palette of the Utz visual identity, it is composed of bright shades of red and blue, and calming white. Blue here is about professionalism and reliability, red is the symbol of passion, and white is all about transparency and trustworthiness.
