Founded as a land-grant college in Hanover for the benefit of New Hampshire citizens, it was later moved to Durham in 1893, thanks to the generous donation of land and money by Benjamin Thompson. Meaning and history
The University of New Hampshire (UNH) has a storied past, tracing its roots to 1866 when it was founded as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in Hanover, in collaboration with Dartmouth College. The vision of Benjamin Thompson, a Durham resident, propelled the college’s relocation to Durham in 1893 after his death, when he bequeathed his farm and assets for the establishment of an agricultural college.
The campus saw its first buildings conceptualized by Charles Eliot in 1892, with the iconic Thompson Hall emerging as the centerpiece. Enrollment began modestly, but a housing crunch soon highlighted the need for infrastructure, leading to the construction of the first women’s dormitory, Smith Hall, in 1908. In the 1910s and 1930s, the Greek system expanded, providing much-needed housing for male students.
A significant name change occurred in 1923, when the institution was officially designated as the University of New Hampshire, aligning with its growing academic and research endeavors​​​​.

These elements are encased in a minimalist yet distinctive shield design, complementing the straightforward and bold typeface that spells out the full name of the university above. The logo’s blue and white palette imparts a sense of academic excellence and steadfastness.
