The current flag carrier of Sri Lanka was established in 1947 as Air Ceylon.

Meaning and history

The national air carrier of Sri Lanka, SriLankan Airlines, founded in the end of the 1970s, started its first flights with two Boeing 707s, which had been leased from a Singapore airline. However, the company soon bought the planes and later purchased another Boeing aircraft, which was used for short-haul flights.
In 1998, the airline was partially privatized by the Emirates Group. In 2008, the Emirates Group was unwilling to renew the contract, and in 2010 it sold its share to the Sri Lankan government.
In May 2014 SriLankan Airlines joined the aviation alliance Oneworld. Today the company has a fleet of 25 aircraft and operates flights to more than 110 destinations across the globe.

What is SriLankan Airlines?
SriLankan Airlines is the name of the national carrier of the state of Sri Lanka. Originally called Air Lanka. It operates a number of scheduled flights to Asia and Europe. The airline was founded on the initiative of the Sri Lankan government on July 17, 1979 after the liquidation of Air Ceylon.

1979

The previous Srilankan Airlines logo featured the old name of the company, “Air Lanka,” in a solid, bold sans. A stylized bird with a beautiful open wing could be seen above. Both the bird and the wordmark were bright red.

1998

A completely different design was introduced when the company adopted the current name. There is a red bird with a green left wing and an orange right wing.
The lettering “Sri Lankan Airlines,” which can come either below or to the right, features an elaborate type. The wavy letters seem to have been inspired by the ocean of the sky.

Font and Color

The custom elegant lettering from the official logo of SriLankan Airlines is set in a fancy sans-serif typeface with the title case characters drawn in wavy lines. The designer typeface, used in this insignia, is, probably, based on such fonts as Florania Regular, or Seibi Shiba Medium, with the contours significantly modified.
As for the color palette of the SriLankan Airlines visual identity, it is based on two shades of blue, standing for air and flights, used for the lettering, and then colors of the national flag of Sri Lanka, — green, orange, and red, — for the emblem.
