Meaning and history
Rio Ave is a Portuguese professional club founded in Vila do Conde in 1939. The team plays its home matches at the Estadio do Rio Ave stadium, which seats just over 12 thousand spectators. Rio Ave’s highest achievement in the Portuguese championship was fifth place in 1982, 2018, and 2020, and the team reached the pan-European level in the 2014/15 season, qualifying for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.
The Rio Ave Futebol Clube was created by a group of friends from the Portuguese city Vila do Conde – João Pereira dos Santos, Albino Moreira, João Dias, Ernesto Braga, and José Amaro, — in 1939, a year after the First Professional Football League was launched in Portugal.
The friends couldn’t decide on the name of the new team for a long time, but in the end, they came up with Rio Ave, in honor of the river that runs through the city of Vila do Conde and flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Other name options were Vilacondense Futebol Clube and Vila do Conde Sport Club.
The club played its first game on April 30, 1939. However, it wasn’t until 1940 that they had their stadium completed. Shortly after, in the 1941-42 season, the team won its first trophy. The following season Rio Ave won the III division district championship. At the beginning of the 1950s, the club was promoted to the second Division, which they eventually won, and it gave Rio Ave an opportunity to show themselves in the Portuguese Cup competition.
1939 – Today
The visual identity of the Portuguese football club is bright, ornate, and memorable. Executed in a very rich color palette, the club’s badge doesn’t look overloaded with details, on the contrary, it evokes a sense of professionalism and strength.
The Rio Ave logo is composed of a black classic crest with a rounded bottom part, placed on an orange football with black accents. The “R. A. F. C.” The inscription is arched Andre the crest, on one of the ball’s stitches.
The crest is the main part of the Rio Ave logo, and it depicts a red clipper with yellow sails, which is placed on the green and white water of the river, which gave the name to the club.
The combination of four colors on the crest represents growth, passion, energy, and unity, the qualities you can’t imagine any sports team without.
Above the crest, there is an arched stylized crown, composed of a stonewall with five massive towers. It was placed there as a tribute to the club’s history and roots.
