Meaning and history
Prairie View A&M Panthers, the sports teams representing Prairie View A&M University, were established as part of the university’s formation in 1876. This Texas-based university has a long-standing history in collegiate sports, particularly in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Panthers have garnered significant attention for their accomplishments, especially in football and basketball.
Among their main achievements, the Prairie View A&M football team stands out for winning the Black College National Championships in 1953, 1954, 1958, 1964, and notably in 1998, marking a significant resurgence after a challenging period. In basketball, the men’s team made notable appearances in the NCAA Tournament, highlighting their competitive spirit. The women’s basketball team has also seen success, winning multiple SWAC championships and making appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Prairie View A&M Panthers is the name of the athletic program from the Prairie View A&M University, located in Texas, USA. The program consists of men’s and women’s teams, competing in various sports disciplines, including Basketball, Tennis, Indoor and Outdoor Track, and many more. The most famous club is the men’s Basketball team. Women’s teams are named Lady Panthers.
1991
The original one looked pretty abstract, with its muzzle broken down into two parts.
1998
The following panther (1998) was given in black over the gold background and was facing to the left.
2002
The redesign of 2002 refined and strengthens the Prairie View A&M University Panthers logo, removing the dark purple circular frame and placing the lettering right on the white background, outlining the yellow letters in purple. As for the main part of the logo, the portrait of the panther, it was also modernized and now the animal was turned to the right and looked more detailed and realistic than on the previous version.
2011
In 2011 the circular composition of the badge was changed to a strong horizontal line of the wordmark placed under the panther portrait, which looked pretty much the same as on the previous emblem but had its lines modernized and emboldened. As for the wordmark, it was set in all capitals and used a strong serif typeface for its gradient purple-to-black letters in a double white and black outline. The logo looked strong and stylish.
2016 – Today
The bright eyes of the club’s mascot were enlarged and now the purple, white and yellow color palette of the Panther’s visual identity and be seen in the eyes of a dangerous animal. As for another significant change, the logotype was enlarged and yellow shades were added to its gradient palette, with white replacing black. Now the visual identity looks brighter and evokes a sense of energy and dynamics.
