Pac-Man was an icon of video game culture during the 1980s. To make the game cuter, Iwatani had the ghosts brightly colored and gave them large, cute eyes. Each ghost has a name and behaves differently. The game has animated sequences between levels that show how ghosts can haunt Pac-Man. This was the first experience of this kind in the history of video games. The game’s protagonist became the first game character to appear on merchandise. There was also a Pac-Man cartoon. The influence of Pac-Man cannot be underestimated.
Meaning and History
Toru Iwatani was born in Tokyo on January 25, 1955. He is considered a creative genius who took video games to a new level, making them interesting not only for boys but also for girls. Interestingly, the Pac-Man character was partly inspired by pizza with a missing slice, and partly by the Japanese character Kuchi. Namco first launched the game in Japan in 1980, it received a halfhearted response. In the US, Pac-Man was released in 1980 under the Midway brand. The game’s name comes from the phrase “paku paku”, which is a slang word for slurping sound. It was originally called Puck Man, but Midway was worried that the vandals might change the word Puck to something ruder. Within a year of its release, Pac-Man was played 250 million times every week. Immensely popular since its original release, Pac-Man is considered one of the true classics of arcade gaming and is practically synonymous with the entire video game medium.
What is Pac-Man?
Pac-Man is one of the oldest video game franchises, having started in the golden age of arcade gaming and is still going strong. Pac-Man succeeded by creating a new genre of gaming that appealed to a wide range of players. The character has also appeared in over 30 officially licensed spin-off games.
1979 (beta)
The Pac-Man logo features a bold, stylized yellow Pac-Man character mid-chomp, set against a vibrant blue, curved banner. The word “PAC-MAN” is written in playful, angular yellow letters with orange outlines, flanked by two red cherries on the right, evoking the game’s iconic imagery. The design’s retro, pixelated aesthetic captures the essence of the classic arcade game, blending nostalgia with energetic colors.
1980 (Japan)
This version was created for the original game when it was released in Japan. It presents the original game name, Puck Man, in a bold, blocky typeface. The logo is done in a bright yellow, which reflects the character itself, and an orange background with a thin red frame. It is interesting that the “C” in the name is stylized as the main character – it is a simple yellow circle with a wedge cut out to represent the character’s mouth. The narrow, elongated shape of the logo reminds of the labyrinths that Pac-Man has to go around.
1980 – Today (International)
The international version looks almost identical to the one created for the Japanese market. The only difference is the middle of the logo as the name has been slightly modified. It is worth noting that the Pac-Man character (letter “C”) now has more space in front of it, which makes it stand out even more. Due to a slightly shorter name, the base has been adjusted but the difference is not drastic.
Font and Color
The bright color palette gives the logo a fun and playful appearance. The yellow is used to represent the main character – Pac-Man. There is also red, which reminds of one of the ghosts.
The logo features a bold and fun font with geometric motifs. Saxo Shadow by Eurotypo and Varese Outlined Shadow by Tarallo Design are the two fonts that resemble the original typeface. Many other fonts, such as Crack-man, Pac Font, Joystix, Arcade, Emulogic, and Videobeast were created on its basis.
