Intuit Inc. is a US software company focusing on financial software. It is based in Mountain View, California. Some of the best-known products are TurboTax, QuickBooks, and Credit Karma, which are apps dealing with tax preparation and accounting. We should also mention the popular email marketing platform Mailchimp.
Meaning and History
The history of the company goes back to 1983, when an ex-Procter & Gamble employee Scott Cook together with Tom Proulx, whom he met at Stanford University, introduced the first software product. Their company originally operated from a simple room on University Avenue in Palo Alto, California. Despite fierce competition from other software firms, including Microsoft, Intuit evolved into a multinational company with around 18,800 employees and revenue of $16.29 billion (2024).
What is Intuit?
Intuit is an American software company known for such financial apps as TurboTax, QuickBooks, and Credit Karma, as well as the Mailchimp platform.
1983 – 2008
The original Intuit logo looked dramatically different from all other versions. The most unusual part of the design was the side view of a person’s head in white space. The upper part of the head, where we human beings have our brains, contained multiple red squares. They apparently represented the thought process leading to an intuitive breakthrough.
This emblem perfectly fit the meaning of the company name, which was placed next to it. Moreover, the very typeface, with its square angles, reflected the squares inside the white “head.”
The most unusual thing about the original design was its rich red color, close to the color of the blood. While this shade is often used in logo design, we rarely see it in brand identities of software firms. The reason behind the choice might have been the desire to stand out among competitors. Also, back in 1983, the company was only beginning its way to the top, and this aggressive color reflected its ambitions.
2008 – 2016
A simpler design was introduced featuring just the name of the brand in a noble shade of blue. While the large head was gone, we could now see two dots over the “t’s“, which made the glyphs resemble a human figure. So, the “human head” idea was still present, albeit in a less obvious way.
2016 – 2022
A couple of minor tweaks were made to the logo. The color grew a bit darker. The most notable of the typeface updates was the introduction of square angles instead of rounded ones.
2022 – present
The logo became more streamlined without losing its recognizable identity. Gone were the “heads” over the “t’s,” as well as the “tails” on the “u” and “n.” As a result, the lettering is more dynamic and easier to grasp at a glance. The logo is the result of the collaboration between in-house designers and a San-Francisco-based identity studio Moniker SF.
Font and Color
The design is based on a custom version of Avenir Next, but the letters got several noticeable tweaks. The color, which the company calls Super Blue, is #236CFF (hex) or 35, 108, 255 (RGB).
