What is FF?
FF is an abbreviation, standing for one of the most popular video games ever created, Final Fantasy. The franchise saw the light at the end of the 1980s, and by today has released more than a dozen of versions, keeping surprising millions of the game’s fans from all over the globe.

In terms of visual identity, the Final Fantasy franchise has been using badges based on one logotype, designed for it by Yoshitaka Amano. With each new release, the inscription can be seen in different colors, decorated by different elements, and placed on various backgrounds, although the core remains unchanged for decades.

Final Fantasy Logo

The logo for the Final Fantasy franchise was designed by the Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano in 1991, and even though with each new release of the game (16 by 2022) the logo gets redesigned, the main element always remains the same —bold uppercase lettering in an elegant and confident serif font, with the narrowed, yet still stable and concrete characters. The original version of the badge uses a simple monochrome palette, with the letteringsometimes accompanied by a thick black underline.

Font and color

The bold uppercase lettering from the primary badge of the Final Fantasy franchise is set in a custom geometric serif font with extra condensed characters, thick bars, and elongated serifs on their ends. The closest fonts to the Final Fantasy Font (its official name) are, probably, Etna XX Condensed Bold, or Runic Condensed, but with some visible modifications of the characters’ contours.

As for the color palette of the Final Fantasy visual identity, its primary version is set in black and white, which makes the badge versatile and timeless. Although, with each new release of the game, the color palette of the badge changes according to the new characters and plot, or just a vision of an artist.
