Doom, a landmark in the gaming industry, was founded by id Software, a company formed by John Carmack, John Romero, Adrian Carmack, and Tom Hall. This groundbreaking entity came into existence in 1991, but it was the release of “Doom” in 1993 that revolutionized the world of video games. id Software, through Doom, brought forth a new era in the gaming world, introducing the first-person shooter (FPS) genre to a wide audience. The game’s innovative graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for custom modifications via WAD files set it apart from anything seen before.

Throughout the years, Doom has maintained its legendary status. Its main achievements include pioneering the FPS genre, inspiring countless games and game developers, and constantly pushing the boundaries of technology and gameplay. The franchise’s impact extends beyond gaming, influencing pop culture and even the tech industry at large. Doom’s source code release in 1997 marked a significant moment, laying the groundwork for modding communities and open-source game development.

Today, Doom’s legacy continues under the stewardship of ZeniMax Media, which acquired id Software in 2009. The series has seen several successful releases in recent years, including “Doom” (2016) and “Doom Eternal” (2020), which have both received critical acclaim for their graphics, gameplay, and faithful adherence to the series’ roots. 1993 – 2016

The Doom visual identity, used by the game for the first twenty-three years after its release, featured the iconic logotype, in a custom serif typeface with the bottom line elongated and sharpened, written in a three-dimensional style, with the gold letters outlined in the thin smooth frame, and decorated by a blueish pattern on the upper part of each letter. The pattern resembles a micro-chip structure, with lots of details, which also looked like a complicated maze.

2016 – Today

The Doom visual identity is brutal and powerful. Composed of a wordmark, which is being placed on different backgrounds, with or without any additional graphics, it is instantly recognizable and became synonymous with shooter video-games.

The extra-bold capital lettering of the Doom logo looks evil and threatening. The elongated lines with sharp-pointed angles resemble of a gateway and show the violent and fighting spirit of the game.

The Doom typeface, with its diagonal cut of the lower letter parts, was replicated by one of the game’s fans and the Amazdoom font was created.

As for the color palette of the Doom logo, it had several versions throughout the game’s history. The original Doom logo was composed of a blue and gold three-dimensional wordmark placed on a bloody-red background with a shooter in green. It was illustrated by Don Ivan Punchatz. The next versions were also drawn as 3D inscriptions and featured brown and blue color palette on dark backgrounds. Then the company decided to simplify its logo and went for a flat 2D design.

Today’s Doom logo is simple black lettering on a white background, but it looks even more powerful and masculine than the 3D colorful designs.

The Doom logo is an iconic one. It is a representation of strength, confidence, and courage. The game’s visual identity’s minimalism adds a strict mood and evokes a sense of concentration on a mission.
