Enforcing the law and administering justice are within the duties of the Department of Justice, a federal executive agency of the US government. It is responsible for prosecuting individuals and organizations accused of violating federal laws. The list of its responsibilities grows with time.
Meaning and History
The Department of Justice has a rich history that traces its origins back to the early days of the American Republic. It was created back in 1870. Earlier, legal affairs were managed more informally and were often the responsibility of individual federal agencies or the Attorney General. In the late 19th century, the DOJ’s responsibilities expanded to include antitrust enforcement, immigration issues, and the safeguarding of civil rights. The DOJ has continued to develop over the years, addressing the evolving challenges within the country.

Today
The logo features a distinctive design that typically includes a representation of the country – the eagle and the flag, which is presented in the form of a shield. The eagle represents strength and authority. Facing to the left, it has its wings outstretched and holds thirteen arrows in one claw and an olive branch with thirteen leaves and thirteen olives in the other. The words “U.S. Department of Justice” are prominently displayed around the top portion of the border. Meanwhile, three stars decorate the bottom of the seal’s border. The title is also accompanied by a “Qui Pro Domina Justitia Sequitur” motto line, which is printed in a semi-circle under the eagle. A corded golden edge completes the images and enhances the overall grandness.
Font and Color
The color scheme consists of patriotic colors: red, white, and blue. There is also a brown and golden/yellow. Golden traditionally represents wealth, abundance, and prosperity, reflecting the country’s resources and economic stability. The use of golden may symbolize glory, honor, and the high aspirations of the country and its people.
The seal features two inscriptions. Both are written using the same font but with different character sizes and colors. The use of a bold serif font with high stroke contrast creates a grand, formal, and professional appearance that matches the authoritative purpose of the seal.
