Comme des Garçons was created with passion and the intention of creating clothes that no one has ever created before. The main line of Comme des Garçons is called a stronghold of avant-garde and the embodiment of the most non-commercial ideas. The themes of her seasonal collections include gender, punk, camp, mortality, and emptiness. Ray has more than 20 brands to her credit, filling the gaps in the main brand. In addition to niche lines like Noir and Tricot, Comme des Garçons produces more mass-market and affordable clothing, accessories, and perfumes.

Meaning and History

After two years as a stylist, in 1969, Rei Kawakubo left the factory and launched Comme des Garçons. It became a Japanese brand with a French name that echoed the lyrics of the song All the Boys and Girls by French singer Françoise Hardy. Comme des Garçons, which she liked the sound of, means “like boys”. In the early 1980s, Comme des Garçons had 80 employees, was sold in 150 locations, and was bringing in $30 million a year. In 1981, Kawakubo made her debut in France and became the first Japanese designer to present a collection in Paris. The perfume brand Comme des Garcons appeared in 1994. Twenty years later, the brand was making about $300 million a year. Together with her husband Adrian Joffe, the founder fully owns the company and controls all internal processes – from the design of collections to the interiors of stores.

Comme des Garçons Logo

The logo is characterized by its simplicity and distinctive design. It consists of the name printed using a bold, geometric font. All the letters are placed right next to each other and barely touch. It adds a unique detail, the designer drew pointed lines, extending the tops of the letters.  The combination of bold letters and black color with unexpected spikes reflects a blend of high fashion with streetwear influences, resonating with a diverse audience and hinting at the avant-garde nature of the brand.

Font and Color

Comme des Garçons Emblem

The logo features a bold and extended font with a modern, impactful style that perfectly represents the brand. To make it look special, the designer made a few modifications to the well-recognized Neue Helvetica Pro 93 Black Extended font. Namely, the tops of the letters acquired spike-like elements on the right.

Originally, the brand sported only black clothing to stand out against the rather colorful designs of other brands. The black in the logo also allowed it to look distinctive. In addition, black has always been considered a classic, timeless, and universal choice. It is strong and quite impressive.
