Ciudadanos Partido de la Ciudadanía is a centrist party, the largest liberal party in Spain, founded in 2006 in Catalonia. The Ciudadanos party represents one of the most promising and constructive new-generation political movements in the Spanish party system.
Meaning and history
In the fall of 2006, the Ciudadanos Party was elected to the Catalan Parliament, receiving almost 90 thousand votes and managing to elect three deputies. In the 2012 parliamentary elections in Catalonia, Ciudadanos won the support of more than 275,000 voters and won nine seats.
After that, it began to expand its activities throughout Spain. As a result, in the 2014 elections to the European Parliament, the Ciudadanos party was supported by 500 thousand of Spaniards and won two parliamentary seats. In the 2015 Spanish parliamentary elections, Ciudadanos won 40 parliamentary seats.
In the early parliamentary elections in Spain in June 2016, the party won 32 seats in the Congress of Deputies.
On December 21, 2017, in the early parliamentary elections in Catalonia, the centrist Ciudadanos party won 37 parliamentary seats after counting almost 100% of the votes. 1.1 million voters, or 25.3%, voted for it.
The party originally focused on the protest electorate in Catalonia and was created as an alternative to the two-party tradition in Spain, while advocating strong ideas of post-nationalism, multiculturalism, and a market economy. Ciudadanos is a liberal opposition to the classical political structures of the country – the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party and the conservative Popular Party.
Ciudadanos is known for its tough stance on the independence of Catalonia – the party is against any form of negotiations with the separatists and is convinced that Spain must exist within its current borders without any changes.
The party advocates political freedom, respect for the individual, and the promotion of private initiative with a minimum of state machinery, declares the need to combat corruption, and supports the unity of Spain. It declares itself a pro-European party, advocating for continued progress in various integration processes. The party advocates the creation of a United States of Europe. It also declares a commitment to respect and complies with the normative framework established by the United Nations, civil liberties, human rights, security, the fight against terrorism, and the protection of the environment.
What is Ciudadanos?
Ciudadanos is the name of the Spanish political party, full name Ciudadanos-Partido de la Ciudadanía, which was founded in July 2006 in the autonomy of Catalonia. It was initiated by Catalan intellectuals who formed the political platform Citizens of Catalonia in 2005.
In terms of visual identity, the Ciudadanos party chooses minimalistic brightness and stability. Throughout its history, the party has only had one major redesign, which kept the original orange color, but intensified it.
2006 – 2017
The first Ciudadanos logo was created in 2006 and stayed with the Catalan political party for more than ten years. It was a bold title case lettering in bright orange, accompanied by a small geometric icon on the left. The graphical part depicted a rectangular dialogue window with rounded angles, set in solid orange with the bold white “C’s” lettering, set in the same typeface as the main wordmark.
2017 – Today
The redesign of 2017 has strengthened and simplified the logo of the Catalan political party Ciudadanos. The font was alternated to the one with extended contours of the characters, the orange got deeper and darker, and the emblem was replaced by a small triangle, which is now set in the bottom left corner of the badge, pointing up left.
Font and color
The bold title case lettering from the primary badge of Ciudadanos is set in a heavy geometric sans-serif typeface with thick lines and straight cuts of the bars. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Biotif Black, or TT Commons Pro Bold.
As for the color palette of the Ciudadanos visual identity, it is based on one intense shade of orange, which is the color of energy, happiness, and dynamics, and the party tends to combine all these features in its work and philosophy.
