Simple as it is, the Winthrop Eagles logo is highly impactful and recognizable.
Meaning and history
There are over 15 teams within the athletic program of Winthrop University, including football, volleyball, basketball, and baseball teams, to name just a few. All of them play under the name of the Winthrop Eagles, which has been the main source of inspiration for the logo.
The emblem represents the side view of the head of an eagle depicted in a highly abstract manner. The bird has a yellow and a brownish outlines, while the filling is white. The creature is facing to the right, which symbolizes it is ready to embrace the future.
What is Winthrop Eagles?
Winthrop Eagles is the name of an athletic program at Winthrop University, located in South Carolina. The program consists of 17 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in various sports disciplines, including Golf, Soccer, Baseball, and others.
1986 – 1995
The Winthrop Eagles logo, designed in 1986, featured an elegant modern heraldic drawing with an eagle in a dark burgundy shade. The bird was formed by several solid elements, which were placed at a slight distance from each other, creating a beautiful white and burgundy pattern. The eagle was placed on a transparent background without any framing or lettering.
1995 – 2020
The redesign of the Winthrop Eagles badge, held in 1995, has introduced a new style and color palette for the program’s visual identity. The new logo boasted a schematic image of an eagle’s head, turned to the right, and executed in two bold contours, yellow and burgundy, with the white central part.
