Meaning and History

Weezer Logo history

Weezer was formed in early 1992 in Los Angeles, California. Their debut performance took place in February of the same year before Keanu Reeves’ band Dogstar. The band founder had asthma and wheezed when breathing, for which he received the nickname Weezer as a child. Rivers subsequently took this word as the name of his band. It was the first thing that came to mind when he was invited to perform as an opening act for the Dogstar band. The guys found their manager thanks to frequent concerts in Los Angeles bars, and in June 1993 they signed a contract with Geffen Records. Weezer gained widespread popularity with their debut album released in 1994. Their follow-up albums, including “Pinkerton” (1996) and subsequent releases, solidified their place in the rock scene. Over the years, the band released multiple studio albums, several mini-albums, and even a DVD. Some were more successful; some were less so.
