The old version of the Vanderbilt University logo featured a black-and-white composition with the two parts of the wordmark separated by a delicate monochromatic emblem. The emblem depicted an enlarged stylized capital “V” in a bold serif font, overlapped by a white oak leaf, placed on a transparent white background, and enclosed into a thin square frame. As for the lettering, it was set in the uppercase in two different styles: with the “Vanderbilt” in bold serif, and the “University” in medium-weight sans-serif.

2022 – Today

The redesign of 2022 has brought a sleek balance and some color to Vanderbilt University’s visual identity. The new concept includes a light-gold emblem, followed by a two-leveled inscription with both parts of the lettering set in one style. The new emblem of the university boasts a voluminous capital “V” in an elegant serif font, which repeats the shape of the letters from the logotype. The inscription part is set in bold black capitals, which look stable and confident.

The bold uppercase lettering from the Vanderbilt University visual identity is set in a classy and heavy serif font with slightly extended contours of the characters. The closest fonts to the one, used in this insignia, are, probably, Adorn Smooth Serif, Matrix II Semi Wide, or Grand Cru Medium S, with some minor modifications.

As for the color palette of Vanderbilt University’s visual identity, it is based on a timeless and elegant combination of gold and black, the scheme, which stands for professionalism, precision, and sophistication. It also evokes a sense of confidence and reliability and represents the rich history and heritage of the University.
