The university’s history traces back to the end of the 1770s. That time, a preparatory school was operating in Pittsburgh. In 1787, Hugh Henry Brackenridge received a charter for the school from the newly created government of Pennsylvania and established an Academy.

During the following years, the city and the state population grew, so the deeper education institution was needed. In 1819, the school was given the status of the university and named the Western University of Pennsylvania. It was supposed to become a western branch of the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia. The main authority of this institution was related to philosophy, mathematics, medicine, and languages.

Throughout the 19th century, the university expanded its operations and grew. By the beginning of the 20th century, it had grown into an independent organization with its own buildings, academic programs and specialists. Referring to the need to avoid misspelling and get back to its origins, in 1908 the WUP officials asked the state’s government to change the name of the institution to University of Pittsburgh.
