Meaning and history

The University of Florida has two predecessors, which had an important role in the history of the university. The construction of the first predecessor of the university was sponsored by the government in 1853. That time, it was East Florida Seminary, specializing in religious and philosophical corners of science. In 1886, it opened its doors in Gainesville. Another precursor of UF was Florida Agricultural College, whose focus was not only agriculture, but also engineering. It was the state’s first land-grant college. In 1905, Florida Agricultural College and East Florida Seminary were incorporated into the new University of the State of Florida, along with two smaller institutions. Sometime later, the institution changed its name to University of Florida.

The university seal is the composition of two main elements: a circular ring with the name of the university, the year of the East Florida Seminary foundation, and six stars. This ring is framed by a woven-like pattern consisting of many ovals joined to each other. Deeper in the seal, we can see a circle embedded into the ring. On the circle, we can see a girl carrying some flowers and standing on a beach. A bit farther from her, the designers have drawn a palm and two steamships floating at the sea. Above the whole composition, there is the ‘Civium in Moribus Rei Publicae Salus’ motto, which is often translated as ‘Welfare of the state depends upon the morals of its citizens’. At the bottom of this circle, the Florida state’s slogan is depicted ‘In God we Trust’.

The primary logotype derives at least from the second half of the 1980s. It shows us the name of the brand in a two-level inscription. The name is bordered from a ‘UF’ acronym by a thin vertical line. The logotype doesn’t have any background or special extensions.

Font

The font combinations of both marks of the university reflect dissimilar features. The university name in the seal is written in a semibold gothic typeface. The slogans of the university and the state have a typical sans-serif script with all capitals. The letters on the logotype have received a different script for each element: the acronym refers to a bold typeface with heavy serifs; the ‘University’ word features a thin serif script; the ‘of’ word is handwritten; and the huge ‘Florida’ has capitalized serif letters with wavy lines.

Color

Both the logotype and the seal of the university feature the same blue color palette for elements and inscription. The only differentiating part is that the primary logotype has a vertical line colored orange, while the seal is devoid of any additional shades.
