Steam was officially released in 2003. Now it is the most popular online store for computer games and a cutting-edge platform for indie developers to distribute their projects.

The first version of Steam became available during the beta-testing of Counter-Strike 1.4, its installation was mandatory for all testers. In 2004, Valve released Half-Life 2, the first single-player game to require the Steam client. By the end of 2005, the first games from third-party developers appeared on the service.

Already in 2007 the first sale took place, such events would later become a meme in the gamer community. In the same year, Steam crossed the threshold of 10 million registered users. In 2009, games from leading publishers began to be released on Steam, and in the following years, publishers themselves began to create internal analogs on a massive scale.

Today you can easily buy and install any game from Steam library, which is undoubtedly the most extensive among similar platforms. Also, Steam can be considered a full-fledged social platform. It has lists of friends and chats, the program shows what friends are playing.

In June 2024, Steam set an online record of 36.9 million users online. About 132 million people visit the platform every month.
