The action of Soul Eater manga and anime series takes place in the Weapon Academy founded by Shinigami. Three teams, each consisting of a weapon master and his partner, who is able to transform into a living weapon, compete to make the “Death Scythe” – the highest title for a weapon – faster than the others. The weapon that becomes the “Death Scythe” will serve the Shinigami himself. The diligent Maka and Soul Eater, the fearless Black Star and patient Tsubaki, the symmetry-obsessed Kid, and the sisters Patty and Liz are the three teams. They will not only have to collect souls but also attend the Academy, becoming stronger every day. They also protect the City of Death from powerful creatures thirsty for power and hatching insidious plans.

Meaning and History

Written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo, the manga was serialized in Square Enix’s “Monthly Shōnen Gangan” magazine from 2004 to 2013. The series quickly gained popularity for its unique art style, engaging characters, and intriguing plot. A total of 25 volumes were published.  It was adapted into an anime series that aired from April 2008 to March 2009, spanning 51 episodes. An anime adaptation was produced by Studio Bones. While the early episodes closely follow the manga, the anime eventually introduces original content and diverges from the source material, leading to a different conclusion. Following the success of the manga and anime, “Soul Eater” spawned several spin-offs, including “Soul Eater Not!” which is a more lighthearted story set in the same universe.

The logo features a distinctive and stylized design that reflects the series’ themes and aesthetic. It includes the inscription “Soul Eater” in a bold, stylized font that conveys a sense of energy and edginess. The inscription is done in black and is set as a backdrop. In front, it has a black rectangle with a white frame that carries the Japanese version of the name. It is printed using a smaller font of a yellow color. In the very center, right between the two words, there is a yellow, round character. This character, Soul Evans, has white half-circles for eyes, a tiny dot for nose, and a thin zigzag line that stands for teeth. There is also a pointed triangle in the upper right corner that represents the hair. It has an arrogant and somewhat frightening expression that captures its demon soul.
