Siri is a smart algorithm that learns the owner’s individual characteristics, and preferences and over time learns to recognize the voice better. The user himself can participate in Siri’s learning process, correcting her in case of incorrect pronunciation and untargeted searches.
Meaning and history
The Siri voice assistant was developed by Apple and is an intelligent system capable of performing a variety of functions at the user’s command. Siri’s main function is to provide information and perform tasks by voice commands.
In the early days of voice technology, Siri was only a not-so-frequently used feature on the iPhone, released by Apple in 2011. At the time, it represented an innovative way for users to communicate with their phone by voice without having to type anything. Siri further evolved by being incorporated into other Apple devices such as the iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.
Speaking of naming. Dag Kittlaus, one of Siri’s co-founders, wanted to name it short and unusual, so he suggested “Siri” since it was a little-known female name in Scandinavia. It was inspired by a colleague in Norway with the name Sigrid, derived from the ancient Scandinavian “Sigriðr” (sigr – victory and friðr – beautiful). The name Siri was strongly disliked by Steve Jobs, and he only kept it because the team couldn’t think of anything better.
Today, Siri’s capabilities are quite extensive. The program can answer questions, perform tasks, communicate, give recommendations, and much more. One of the most popular functions allows the owner of the device to call the right numbers, dictate, and send messages.
Siri is constantly improving and the functionality of the voice assistant is getting wider and wider. The newer the iOS update, the more functions the voice assistant will be able to perform. For example, starting with iOS version 12, the function of quick commands appeared. The voice assistant tracks daily repetitive actions and soon offers to perform them itself.
What is Siri?
Siri is a virtual assistant developed by Apple, available on all devices produced by the company. In 2010, Apple bought Siri Inc., the manufacturer who owned the idea for the virtual assistant. The system was then integrated into the iPhone 4S and took root in subsequent models. Thanks to Apple, Siri was the first development to enter the voice assistant market.
In terms of visual identity, Siri has changed many looks. With the evolution of Apple products, and the progress of the program itself, the logo of the voice assistant has become a great depiction of motion, innovations, and technology improvements.
2010 – 2011
The original Siri emblem was designed for the program before it was acquired by Apple, hence it is completely different from all the following designs. It was a black square with rounded angles and glossy gradients, where the smooth white handwritten “Siri” was set closer to the bottom edge, and accompanied by a rounded stroke above the first “I”, drawn in a lime green shade.
2011 – 2013
After the acquisition of the voice assistant by Apple, the new logo was created for the product, in the minimalistic corporate style. For the first two years, it was a circular icon in a matte metallic shade with an internal outline in dark gray and a laconic image of a microphone in the center. The mic is engraved on the silverish surface and has its “soft” part executed in purple gradients, which glows by the volume of a speaking person.
2013 – 2015
The redesign of 2013 was all about simplifying and flattening. This time it was a square with rounded angles, set in a light shade of gray, with a thin white circle and a white microphone inscribed into it. The mic featured the same style as the one from the previous badge but was drawn in plain white, with no gradients and bright accents.
2015 – 2016
In 2015 the main shade of the Siri emblem turned deep purple. The softened square shape remained untouched, white the white internal outline was removed. The background of the icon was now gradient, with the darkest shades at the bottom. As for the main element of the logo, the microphone, it is still set in white and in the same style as before, but the image got slightly larger, making up a very balanced composition.
2016 – 2017
A completely new concept for the Siri logo was created in 2016, with the introduction of iOS 9. It is still the square icon with the rounded angles, but the image of the microphone is gone. Its place is taken by a magical gradient image with abstract sound waves drawn in lighting shades of blue, pink, and green on a dark background. The logo is all about mystery and imagination, at the same time it has a strong futuristic feeling.
2017 – 2021
The redesign of 2017 has kept the idea of the sound waves but switched the shape of the icon to a roundel, and changed the disposition of the bright elements on it. The colors got a bit lighter, and the pattern — more creative. The icon was in use until 2021, when the iOS 15 was introduced.
2021 – Today
In 2021 the color palette of the Siri logo was alternated, with green now being a prevailing shade. Its turquoise and emerald shades make the most of the background, while the glowing elements go from pink to blue, with the white spot in the center. Apart from the graphical icon, Siri also got a wordmark, set in the same gradient color palette, but with plain shades.
2024 (Tentative)
For iOS 18 the Siri logo was completely rethought. First of all, the shape returned to the classic icon — a square with rounded corners. Secondly, the color palette became lighter and brighter with orange to purple gradients. Thirdly, on the vivid background now there is a white contoured image with a stylized infinity symbol inscribed into a circular frame.
Font and color
The primary logo of Siri is composed of just a graphical part, but the product also has an additional wordmark, which is set in the title case of a modern yet modest sans-serif typeface, which looks pretty close to such commercial fonts as TT Interphases Pro, Goldbill, or Articulat CF, with just minor modifications.
As for the color palette of Siri’s visual identity, it is all about creativity and endless possibilities. The variety of gradient shades makes the simple image look futuristic and mysterious, promising an unforgettable experience with the Siri app.
