Meaning and history
Founded in the latter half of the 20th century, the Northern Kentucky Norse emerged as the athletic embodiment of Northern Kentucky University (NKU). Initially competing at the Division II level, the Norse’s ascension to NCAA Division I in the 2012-2013 season marked a significant milestone, symbolizing both growth and heightened ambition.

The team’s triumphs in the Horizon League Tournament in 2017 and 2019, leading to subsequent appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, are standout moments. 1988
The Northern Kentucky Norse logo adopted in 1988 featured the head of a mythic creature and the lettering “NKU NORSE.”
2005
In 2005, the university introduced an emblem where the Viking’s helmet and two crisscrossed swords could be seen. The lettering “NKU NORSE,” which was now given in a totally different style, could be seen above.
2016 – Today
The following update took place in 2016. The grey helmet and swords grew gold; the text became somewhat cleaner, while the overall design remained the same.
